Deviousness |
I started by baking 3-9"X12" sheet cakes (about 1.5" tall after trimming) ... cut those in half (9x6) and layered em with buttercream - 2 layers for ramp, 3 for car
I stuck those in the freezer until they were pretty solid so I could shape them as best I could w/ a sharp serrated knife (made the car slightly thinner than ramp)
iced everything then base fondant layer
the windows I cut out of black and glued on with water/royal icing (whichever nearest) the grill, logo and lights were all just fondant shapes with royal icing detail that I painted with silver luster dust (mixed with vodka)
the black around the bottom and silver bumpers are glued on top of the red layer and all the wheel detail was just piped royal icing
everything's outlined with royal icing
mixed a tiny ball of dark blue fondant w/ white to get the marbly "ice" for the ski jump
other than that best advice is make sure your fondant isn't too thick/heavy but don't let it get too thin/dry either (my red was cracking/ripping before it was on the car while my blue/white was perfect gah)
and I didn't assemble car and ski jump until right before we were going to light the candles so nothing would squish (although I did use 4 dowels for support)
also I happened to find some cheap "sparkler" candles for the "rockets" that sparked and relit themselves so that was a convenient find
I think that's mostly it... it was a good amount of cake for our get together (about 8-10? of us only ate about half the ski jump so the mini could be admired and saved for later)
